GROUND IN CLAY SOILED DETERGENCY TEST CLOTHS

Soils and stains which are ground into the fibers of clothing are some of the most difficult to remove.  Our Ground in Clay soiled cloth is designed to provide a controlled laboratory test material which simulates real-life ground-in particulate soils.  It is used widely to test home laundry detergents for their ability to handle particulate soils.

The soil we use is a mixture of natural clays selected to be representative of clay soils found in the home laundry.  It is entirely particulate matter.  A dark-red, iron rich clay is one of the constituents and the iron mineral gives the stain a pinkish hue.  The soil is a proprietary mixture of natural clays developed to make Ground In Clay soiled swathes that simulate the clay soiled cloths used by Colgate and described in the paper by J.T. Inatamorati, et al, J. Am. Oil Chem. Soc. 52 76-80 (1975).

Mechanical action by a proprietary process is used to force the clay particles into the spaces between the fibers of the cloth.  The soiling medium is a wet clay mud.  The grinding action with wet clay is similar to the process which occurs with clothing worn in many outdoor activities.

We maintain a stock of three popular fabrics soiled with Ground in Clay.  Most other fabrics in the Testfabrics, Inc. and Textile Innovators Corp. catalogs which are strong enough to withstand the mechanical action can be soiled to order.  We produce the soiled cloths in the form of strips 4"x72" and can cut those to order.  Our standard size and package is as follows:

Swatch Size 3"x4" with pinked or fused edges
Swatches per Package 24
Stock Fabric Cotton #400,
Cotton Polyester  Durable Press 7435 WRL,
Polyester #777

The technique we use for grinding in clay can be used to grind other soils into the fibers of cloth.  We welcome your inquiries for other soils and stains.  Dust Sebum soiled cloths are our most used test material, but we also offer numerous food, beverage, oily and environmental soils and stains.  Contact George C. Feighner for more information.
